Con influencias tan diversas como el hip hop y las películas de zombis, Hewlett se dio a conocer a mediados de la década de 1990 como cocreador de Tank Girl, una serie de cómic que destiló el espíritu de una época. With influences as diverse as hip hop and zombie movies, Hewlett rose to prominence in the mid-1990s as the co-creator of Tank Girl, a comic book series that exuded the zeitgeist. With his roommate Damon Albarn he created the revolutionary musical group Gorillaz. The hit virtual pop band made up of cartoon characters is a global phenomenon. Gorillaz have topped the charts, toured and toured the world, from San Diego to Syria, and garnered millions in streaming listening and record sales along the way.

Since then, Hewlett has continued to collaborate with Albarn on projects such as the exquisite and elaborate staging of Wu Cheng'en's Chinese novel Monkey: Journey to the West, featuring circus acrobats, Shaolin monks and Chinese singers. In 2006, London's Design Museum named him Designer of the Year, and in 2009, he and Albarn received the BAFTA Award for the animated sequence Monkey for the Beijing Olympics. In 2015, in an exhibition entitled The Suggestionists, he has exhibited his graphic work at the Saatchi Gallery in London, where the new direction that Hewlett's exciting career has taken has been made clear.
